RE: Delegation of Authority - Approve Exceptions to Principal Investigator Status

The University of California Contract and Grant Manual, Chapter 1-500 gives me the authority to approve the submission of a contract or grant proposal by an appointee outside the list of eligible appointees (as set forth in the University Contract and Grant Manual, Chapter 1-530c) in special circumstances when such action is in the best interest of the University, and provided that space and facilities can be assigned without detriment to the regular instructional and research responsibilities of the University.

I am redelegating this authority to approve exceptions to principal investigator status to:

  • The Dean of each UCI school for UCI employees whose home department/unit is within their school, including school-based centers.
  • The Vice Chancellor–Health Affairs for UCI employees whose home department/unit is within the College of Health Sciences or the UCI Medical Center.
  • The Vice Chancellor–Research, the Associate Vice Chancellor–Research Engagement, the Associate Vice Chancellor–Research Administration, and the Executive Director–Sponsored Projects Administration for UCI employees whose home department/unit is an Organized Research Unit, Special Research Unit or Campus-based Center that reports to the Office of Research, or any other unit not described elsewhere within this delegation.

Procedures implementing this authority shall include coordination with other appropriate components of the campus and shall be developed and maintained by the Office of Research.

This authority may not be further redelegated and supersedes IDA128, the July 21, 1995 delegation of authority from Chancellor Wilkening on the same subject.
