RE: Delegation of Authority - Copyright Ownership

The University of California Copyright Ownership policy, dated August 19, 1992, sets forth chancellors’ authority for copyrighted works under their respective jurisdictions. I am designating you as the central resources for UCI faculty and staff to consult about application of the policy.

You are delegated the authority to:

  1. Issue guidelines, implementing procedures, and supplementary campus policies consistent with university copyright policy.
  2. Identify campus facilities or projects as having special copyright assignment obligations and issue guidelines and implementing procedures regarding assignment of copyright in works produced using such facilities or projects.
  3. Register copyrights, accept copyrights from third parties, and sell, assign, or grant licenses in the name of the Regents for any rights to copyrights.
  4. Release university ownership rights to copyrighted works which are in the name of the Regents of the University of California pursuant to Section III of the university copyright policy.

Any redelegation or reassignment of these authorities shall be no less restrictive than this delegation and must be processed in accordance with UCI Sec. 103-12: Delegation of Authority and Signature Authorization Guidelines.

This letter supersedes IDA 613, dated February 4, 2019, regarding copyright ownership.
